Tips to winter-proof your home

Protecting Your Home During Winter
As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, your home requires extra care to withstand the challenges of winter. A seasonal “MOT” for your property can help prevent costly repairs, safeguard your belongings, and reduce the risk of making an insurance claim due to freezing temperatures, theft, or fire.
Inside your home, keeping it warm is vital not only for your comfort and health but also to avoid issues like burst pipes, damp, and condensation. Proper insulation in the loft and around outdoor pipes is essential. If your water tank is in the loft, ensure it’s insulated on the top and sides, leaving the underside exposed to warmth from below. Know where your stopcock is in case of a leak, and if you’re leaving home for a few days, set your thermostat to at least 15°C to prevent frozen pipes. Annual servicing of your boiler by a Gas Safe registered plumber is another key step.

Winter also heightens the risk of burglary, fire, and flooding. Longer, darker nights provide cover for potential intruders, so securing your home with a reliable alarm system, mortice locks on doors and windows, and vigilance about locking up is crucial. Keep sheds and garages secured, and avoid leaving spare keys in obvious hiding places like under mats. Flooding is another common winter concern, especially in areas prone to heavy rain. Knowing your flood risk via the Environment Agency’s tools can help you prepare with sandbags and a plan to move valuables upstairs quickly. Keeping your insurance details handy is a good precaution.

Fire hazards increase in winter with the use of open fires, candles, and even electric blankets. Install and regularly test smoke detectors, never leave open flames unattended, and ensure fire extinguishers are on hand. Fireguards are essential for open fireplaces, and fireworks should be used far from your home following safety guidelines.
With a little preparation and attention, you can protect your home and enjoy a safer, warmer winter season.
